Description
Ray Mitchell's 1955 North South Winter United  Golf  Association  ( U G A ) "Negro Golf " Program. The program has 14 pages including the covers and in outstanding condition  for  a 53 year old item. The (2 ) staples that held the program were hand removed by me from the thick high quality off white program. You can put staples back in the holes by hand, the holds are not torn. All printing and photo's are quality black & white The program is approx  8 1/2  x  11 inches and was fold once vertically THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ITEMS FROM SEGREGATED GOLF AND AFRICAN AMERICAN LIFE YOU WILL EVER FIND!! The Tournament was won by Dr. Charlie Sifford, the only African American in the World Golf Hall of Fame.I have had Dr. Sifford Autograph many items, but never this program. It remains with original signatures of those that signed in 1955. The program is autographed by Ted Rhodes who was considered the "Greatest African American Golf  Professional" of his time, never to play in the PGA. Ted was also the mentor to other great golfers including Lee elder, and the personal golf trainer to " Boxing Great" Joe Louis. The Program is also signed by another great golfer that lead the fight against racism in golf, Mr Bill Spiller. In 1947 Bill Spiller, Ted Rhodes and another black pro Madison Gunther submitted their entries in a PGA sponsored tournament and were accepted. Shortly thereafter,  the PGA returned their entries pointing to the Association's "Caucasians Only"  clause. The three sued the  PGA for $315,000  in 1948 on the grounds that they were denied an opportunity to make a living in their profession.  There are many other golfers from Negro Golf  and additional celebrities that I am unable to identify that have signed the program. Others that I can identify include: Negro League Great  &  Dodger 2nd basemanJunior Gillam Negro League Great & Giants outfielder Hank Thompson Negro League Great &  Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe Singing Great Mr B,  Billie Eckstine (  Charlie Sifford was Eckstine personal golf  instructor, and financed Sifford to play  pro golf.    "The Greatest Entertainer of all Time" Sammy Davis Jr  with The Will Mastin Trio   Ray Mitchell  Golfer and Promoter of  Negro GolfIf you can identify signatures on the on the programplease advise. I am also interested in all Negro Golf items and signatures of male and female Negro Golfers of the time.
