Four baby owls (two boys and two girls) were the mascots of the 1998 Nagano Winter Games. Named Sukki, Nokki, Lekki and Tsukki, the Snowlets represented the fire, wind, earth and water that make up life in the forest. 47,484 nickname proposals were submitted from all over Japan. The Subcommittee on Marks of the Nagano Olympics Committee (NAOC) decided on these nicknames because "they are friendly and easy to remember". The first two letters of each name spell Snowlets.
