At the time of the films release in 1988, Moroccan Saïd Aouita held the world record in five running events: the 1,500 meters; 2,000 meters; 3,000 meters; 5,000 meters and two mile. He is also a two-time Olympic medalist who captured the gold in the 5,000 meters at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and the bronze in the 800 meters at the 1988 Games in Seoul. This film is a documentary of his life with comments from other stars of the track, namely Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram. STEVE CRAM: GOOD FOR THE FIRST MILE This documentary features middle distance ace Steve Cram from March 1983 to the World Championships in Helsinki in August of the same year. You will get insights into this athlete through his coach, parents, and fiancé. Although he struggles through injuries to his calf, groin, and ankle, you will see his training, racing cross country, as well as tune up races at both 800 and 1500 meters. The last 15 minutes of this production shows the three races in three days at the World Championships. With 12 athletes in the 1500 meter final including Ovett, Aouita, Scott, Walker, Abascal, Boit, and others. Although the competition is fierce, with a 65 second first lap the race is tactical. Cram, the youngest man in the field at age 22, becomes the first World Champion at 1500 meters to the surprise of many, including his coach who states, "I can’t believe it".
