DVD#2------ ALBERTO SALAZARIn this auction you will find a DVD with some great Alberto Salazar footage. Marathon 1 is a great documentary that follows both Alberto Salazar & Rob deCastella's training build up for there clash at the 1983 Rotterdam Marathon. Please see listing below for more details. 1. Marathon 1 In this 49 minute film you will see the buildup and showdown of Alberto Salazar and Rob De Castella in 1983 as they prepare for and race the Rotterdam Marathon. With their personal bests only four seconds apart, these two runners will face each other for the first time over the marathon distance. You will meet their family, coaches, and see each athlete train. There is footage of the 1983 World Cross Country Championships where Salazar places fourth and De Castella sixth. The last 20 minutes highlights the Rotterdam race, then in it's third year. The pack of runners is 7 at the halfway point, then the pace slows slightly before the final drive home with 4 miles to go. With the last mile ran in 4:31, De Castella pulls away for the win in 2:08:37 (24 seconds off the world mark at that time). This rare video was directed by Tim Kupsch, produced by John Blackett-Smith, and was written and researched by Bob Leaman. 2.1983 Rotterdam This race is probably known as one of the greatest marathons in history. Watch as a lead pack of 7 running greats including Alberto Salazar, Rob deCastella, Carlos Lopes, Rodolfo Gomez and Armand Parmentier stay together for well over 20 miles of the race. deCastella & Lopes eventually pull away from the pack & engage in an awesome battle to the line with deCastella just nipping Lopes by 2 seconds for a 2:08:37 victory. This coverage shows about 18 minutes of highlights and compliments the race footage form the Marathon 1 documentary listed above just perfectly. 3. 1984 Phoenix 10km This is another great race between Salazar & Rob deCastella or was heralded to be one anyway. Little known Tanzanian Zach Barie runs deCastella right to the line to finish in an amazing new world road 10km record. Deek also finishes under the old record as Salazar is left to finisg in 8th place. This race has great post & pre-race interviews with all 3 runner's. GOOD LUCK!!!! THANKS FOR LOOKING!!!! DVD#3-------JIM RYUN 1. Jim Ryun: America's Greatest Miler This one hour video is set with Jim Ryun and his long time coach Bob Timmons, being interviewed from the infield of the 1996 Kansas Relay. They review nearly 10 years of Ryun's running career from a sophomore in high school, through college at the University of Kansas, and beyond. You will learn that Ryun's loss of hearing often made it difficult to hear the splits given during the races. He discusses how he became sick during the Tokyo Olympiad where he first realized the significance of the Olympic games. Stories are shared of grinding spikes down to move from cinder to clay surfaces, cutting his foot on a pop bottle, as well as how this young athlete coped with the pressure from the media. Ryun shares his experience of winning the Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Sullivan Award, and Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Ryun shares being elected to Congress in 1996 as well as how faith played a strong role in his life experiences. Narrator John Holt sets the stage well as other interviews are introduced between the actual race footage and many other guests. Coach J.D. Edmiston took over from Timmons during Ryun's senior year in high school and he shares the pressures present with such high demands from the press. KU teammate Gene McLain reports how the mindset of athletes changed after Ryun broke four minutes in high school. Rich Clarkson had special access in covering the races, both as a photojournalist and as a confidant. Marty Liquori, the second high school athlete to break the barrier, describes the highly anticipated races between them. Jim Grelle and Peter Snell also share their impressions from the big meets. Ann Ryun shares how they met and later joined in marriage in 1969. After watching this video you will feel that you truly relived this unique decade of middle distance running and spectacular achievement. 20 races are featured from March of 1963 to the 1972 Olympic Games. Some of the highlights include: June 1964, Compton Relays in Los Angeles, California. As a Junior in high school Ryun became the first athlete to run under four minutes in the mile, clocking 3:59.
