Series 1 and 2 depict Sam the Eagle participating in various sports against the Olympic Star background. Sam the Eagle was designed by Disney artist C. Robert Moore and is the Official Mascot of the 1984 Olympics. Series 3 features the Official Pictograms designed by Keith Bright & Associates. The pictograms first appeared at the 1948 London Games and were developed to assist spectators in recognizing the 23 sports in visual terms which overcome international language barriers.Each pin in the set was hand-fashioned by an artisan in the ancient process of cloisonne and involves intricate placement of powdered enamel into small copper outlined areas. Fired under tremendous temperatures, polishing with pumice and charcoal, and gold plated.
