Description
Please check out my EBAY store for other different bricks they are under collectibles like the rare VEEDERSBURG. Also in my EBAY store are a few of my many autographed bricks that include a taping of the brick being autographed - see auction description for details. DARIO FRANCHITTI autographed brick. Here is a little history. On May 27, 2007, Franchitti won a rain-shortened Indianapolis 500, finishing under a yellow flag after an accident involving Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti following lap 163. The race was halted due to rain three laps later. His prize money of $1.6m was equal to the entire purse for the 1982 race. During the 2007 season, Franchitti survived two huge crashes which saw his car flip upside down both times. The first at Michigan saw him tangle with Dan Wheldon resulting in his car flipping before being hit again by Scott Dixon. The contact with Dixon was only inches away from his head and the accident saw seven cars (including Franchitti) retire from the race. The second flip came a week later at Kentucky. As Franchitti crossed the start/finish line to finish the race, the Scotsman who had not realised the chequered flag had been waved continued to race and crashed into the back of Kosuke Matsuura flipping yet again and hitting the outside wall. Franchitti took full responsibility for the incident. Franchitti finished 1st in points in the 2007 season with four wins finishing ahead of Scott Dixon by just 13 points. Dixon ran out of fuel on the last lap of the season-ending race, allowing Franchitti to take the win and the championship, his first championship win since Formula Vauxhall Lotus in 1993. Franchitti will be returning to the IndyCar series for 2009 in the Target/Ganassi #10 car, replacing Dan Wheldon. It has been confirmed tha he will drive in the non points Surfers Paradise race in Australia. The autograph is in permanent silver ink and was obtained after many hours of waiting in the famous GASOLINE ALLEY during practice and qualifications. Signed in 2003. It is stamped W.C. Co. Culver Block, Pat. May 21, 1901. It is 9" by 4" by 3 1/4" in size. Upon request, a DVD-R recording is available showing the sequence of the autographed brick on the pavement of GASOLINE ALLEY after the brick was signed and DARIO FRANCHITTI as he walks away ( The man who owns the brick; was holding the brick during the signing). Please feel free to ask any questions. This brick was purchased from an INDY fan who obtained it during track renovations. If you want something from the old brickyard, here is your chance to get a brick. These bricks are not perfect because they came out of the track. They may have small chips or are curved slightly. Here is a piece of history on the speedway. This is a quote about it. The Yard of Bricks The Yard of Bricks is another nostalgic link with the past. After the track’s original surface of crushed rock and tar was abandoned after only a few days of use in August 1909, it was replaced during that fall by 3.2 million street- paving bricks, trucked in by rail from the western part of the state. Approximately 90 percent were Culver Blocks, manufactured by the Wabash Valley Clay Company of Veedersburg (near the Illinois border), the remainder being supplied by other firms in the same general area. The bricks were laid on their side in a bed of sand, staggered in rows and separated by about 3/8th of an inch on either side so that mortar could be poured between them for strengthening. In the spring of 1936, patches of asphalt were applied to the rougher portions of the turns. Over the next couple of years, more and more asphalt was applied, so that by the time of the 1939 race, only about 650 yards of the main straight were still of bricks. This portion survived for another 22 years until October 1961, when it too was covered over, leaving exposed only 3 feet for the entire width of the track at the start/finish line. The entire 2½ miles has been resurfaced several times since then, with a fresh batch of the original bricks being inlaid at the start/finish line once the new surface has had time to harden.
