He took the US Open trophy for a second time and then traveled to the UK to win the British Open, the first American amateur to do so. This complete set of (4) four signed (in pencil) official scorecards are from Jones' triumphant four rounds of the 1926 British Open. Held for the first time at the forty-year old Royal Lytham & St. Annes club, the most northern of the English championship links courses, Lytham's first Open also held some tourney firsts. Regional qualifying was introduced to cut the entry of 293 to a more manageable 117. The championship was played over three days instead of two and gate money was charged for the first time to control spectator numbers after players had been hampered by stampeding crowds a year earlier at Prestwick. Jones scored rounds of 66 and 68 in regional qualifying at Sunningdale, impressive in the wooden shaft era when rounds under 70 were still a rarity. However, with five holes left to play in the final round, Jones trailed his journeyman playing partner Al Watrous by two shots. At the 17th hole par 4, Jones pulled his tee shot into a sandy lie. With 175 yards to go, and rough, bushes and bunkers blocking his view of the green, Jones caught the ball perfectly and landed it closer to the pin than Watrous. Although the fellow American was also on in two, Watrous was stunned by his opponent's amazing recovery and he three putted his lead away. An amazing one of a kind item and truly historical piece of golf memorabilia. Each scorecard measures 6" x 4 1/2". The scorecards are in excellent condition overall and include a LOA from PSA/DNA.
