The back is stamped “Laurie Auchterlonie Mastercraft” The sole of the club is stamped “ 3 D & W A St. Andrews” The head face has hand-punched dot markings and the hickory shaft has a leather grip with pitched twine whipping. The shaft is original, being stamped “D & W Auchterlonie St.Andrews. The Auchterlonie family were was one of St. Andrews’ great golfing dynasties of the 20th century. Laurie took over being Professional at the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1963 from his father, William, who had been appointed in 1935 to follow “The Grand Old Man Of Golf” Old Tom Morris and Andrew Kirkaldy. Winner of the Open Championship in 1883 he built up a famous clubmaking business. His son Laurence, born in 1904, carried on the fine family tradition in the Auchterlonie shop in St. Andrews.
