Description
"Ouimet, Vardon and Ray on the Green, Playoff Round of the 1913 US Open at The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts." This photograph was taken on the 13th green at The Country Club in Brookline, MA during the three-way playoff between Francis Ouimet, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray during the 1913 United States Open. Vardon and Ray observe Ouimet from the green. A gentleman holding the pin is standing in the lower left foreground of the picture. Ouimet, an amateur, would beat professionals Vardon and Ray of England, considered the best golfers in the world, to help establish golf as a popular sport in America. Reminiscing in his autobiography A Game of Golf, Francis Ouimet recalls "Vardon dropped a nice putt for a three on the thirteenth, one under par, which brought him within a stroke of me." (from Richard Johnson's book, "Century of Boston Sports."). The photograph is from the Collection of The Sports Museum. The photographer is unknown. This is a new, archival quality 16" x 20" giclee print. It is bagged in clear cellophane and has a loose foam core backer, and makes an amazing gift for anyone who enjoys golf history. Basic information (title, date, source) is tastefully printed along the bottom (not shown in thumbnail). International shipments may be rolled in a tube.
