We offer 21 early photography items in the auction format every week. In addition, we list a few surprise BUY IT NOW features. RARITY. This ambrotype depicting 2 members of a cricket team in uniform from the late 1850s or the early 1860s is a rarity.DESCRIPTION. 2 young men wear identical hats. The one on our left holds a ball. His belt reads "TEAM CAPTAIN". He wears a white shirt and similar white pants. He has padding from above his knees down to the bottom of the image. This padding is tied behind his knees.  The young man on the right wears shirt and pants that are seemingly identical to the young man at left. He has a glove on each hand and holds a cricket bat. There are 3 stumps, leaning against the table, between the players. AMBROTYPES. The ambrotype process was invented in 1854 and was popular until 1863. (and later in Japan) An ambrotype is a positive image on glass, so each one is unique. In order to be seen, a black backing (whether paint, paper or metal) has to be used. (The exception are ruby glass ambrotypes which are on colored glass.) SIZE. Quarter plate or 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches.HOUSING. Thermoplastic Union Case (often erroneously referred to as 'gutta percha.') Case measures 4 7/8 x 3 15/16 inches.CASE MOTIF. In Krainik, Kirainik and Walvoord it's referred to as 'The Sweet Potato Dinner' and in Berg it's referred to as 'General Marion's Invitation to Dinner.' The former book tells the origins of the case relating to General Marion (also known as The Swamp Fox) of American Revolutionary War fame. Case is in good condition with one rounded corner.CONDITION OF AMBROTYPE. Some brown lines mostly on man at left's upper body and face. Small black and brown spots. APPEARANCE. Despite condition, this is a very strong image visually. Excellent contrast, great composition and lots of content. PLEASE ADD $5.00 SHIPPING U.S. & CANADA, $10.00 INTERNATIONAL.
