Race Horsesat RiskOvernutritionDrugsBreakdownsBy Lennart Krook and George A. Maylin1989 Copyright © 1989 by Lennart Krook. Unstated First Edition - Privately published by the authors. Printed in the United States of America at The Sheridan Press, Hanover, Pennsylvania. Here is a rare and controversial work on what causes ‘breakdowns’ in thoroughbred horse racing. I say controversial because as you will read in the Introduction from the book below, the authors published the finding of their scientific investigational study, “Track conditions and racing injuries in thoroughbred race horses” and conclude that the ‘track condition’ has no influence on racing injuries. I am by no means an expert, but I do follow the news quite closely and can’t help remembering the 20 horses that had fatal breakdowns at Arlington Park Racetrack in Arlington Heights, Illinois during an 8 week period in 2006. In 2007 the track owned by parent company Churchill Downs Inc. spent nearly $11 million to install a synthetic Polytrack surface in time for the track's May 4, 2007 opener, becoming the fifth track in North America with a synthetic racing surface. Excerpt from the Introduction Why do so few horses bred for racing ever get to training? Why do so few horses trained for racing ever race? Why do so many horses race for only a few years? Why do so many horses break a bone during training or racing? Fractures, the most dramatic end of a racing career or the cause of a failure in training, are widely believed to be traumatic. Traumatic means that an excessive external force acts or has acted on the bone in question. Bad track conditions, a term that has never been defined, are considered the major cause of breakdowns, including fractures. We have published the results of a study, "Track condition and racing injuries in thoroughbred race horses" (1), and have found that the track condition has no influence on racing injuries.- We have studied a great number of fractures in thoroughbred race horses suffering a fracture during a race (2) or during training. We have found that the fractures occur because of an underlying disease. In other words, the fractures are pathologic. We have reported our findings in a scientific journal, so the information is available to the scientific community. The, information is not, however, readily available to those most concerned: those involved in horse breeding, training, and racing. The purpose of this book is to convey the scientific information to trainers, breeders, and all those involved in racing in popular terms. The origin and definition of these terms are given in the Vocabulary Section. As an introductory case, we present the problem of a well-bred yearling thoroughbred colt. He had had some minor lameness problems which were diagnosed radiographically as cysts in both front pastern bones and soreness of the suspensory ligament. With restricted exercise and daily treatments of oral phenylbutazone, the colt was considered sound. He was started back with light workouts on the lunge line. While lunging, the groom heard a loud pop from the right front leg prior to the colt falling down. The post-mortem examination revealed a spiral fracture of the shaft of the arm bone. The fracture started in the neck of the arm bone and extended down to the lower end of the shaft. On gross examination, there were no visible changes in the bone to explain the fracture. Under the microscope, on the other hand, dramatic changes in the bone structure were detected…” CONTENTSI. INTRODUCTION II.
